A recent nationwide poll of voters suggests that President Joe Biden currently leads Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup.
However, when third-party candidates are included on the ballot, Biden trails Trump by a narrow margin.
Conducted by Quinnipiac University and released on Wednesday, the survey shows Biden leading Trump by three percentage points, with 48 percent to 45 percent.
However, when independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. and Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein are included, Trump leads by 39 percent to 38 percent
It's worth noting that Trump lost the popular vote in both of his previous bids for the White House. Therefore, a win among voters nationally would mark a significant shift in his fortunes.
Despite facing 91 felony counts related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and other legal issues, Trump is once again the presumed nominee for his party.
On the other hand, Biden is seeking re-election amid concerns about his age and fitness for duty. Additionally, he is grappling with criticism over his administration's handling of inflation, which has impacted many Americans financially.
The survey results indicate a close race, with both candidates within the margin of error.
This is consistent with other polls suggesting that the 2024 election is highly competitive.
The data may raise concerns at the Biden-Harris campaign headquarters, where supporters are urging the left to unite behind the president to prevent a second Trump term.
However, the results could also energize critics of the president within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
They argue that Biden needs to do more to inspire voters for his re-election bid.
The poll included responses from 1,407 registered voters across the US from March 21-25, with a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
