Rockford, Illinois resident Darlene Weber found herself in a terrifying situation when an intruder entered her home, describing him as "the devil incarnate."
She credits her survival to her son, without whom she believes she might not have made it through the ordeal.
The attacker, a 22-year-old man, went on a rampage through Rockford, ultimately causing four fatalities and injuring seven others, including Weber and her children.
Recounting the attack, Weber said it felt like everything happened in the blink of an eye.
As she tried to escape with her dog, Brandy, the attacker stabbed her in the face. Brandy bit the attacker, giving Weber enough time to flee.
When Weber's son, 21-year-old Jacob Vollman, tried to find his mother, he faced the attacker himself. Despite the attacker's attempt to confront him, Vollman managed to keep him at bay.
Weber's daughter, 23-year-old Cathy Gilfillan, also faced the attacker, but Vollman's intervention prevented further harm. Both women credit Vollman with saving their lives.
Among the deceased are Jay Larson, a mail carrier, and 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb, who died protecting her sister.
