Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of Ethan Crumbley, the perpetrator of the deadliest school shooting in Michigan's history, have been convicted of involuntary manslaughter. They have each received prison sentences of 10 to 15 years.
During the sentencing, Judge Cheryl Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan, clarified that the convictions were not an indictment of their parenting. She noted that while they could not have predicted their son's actions, their repeated failure to address warning signs contributed to the tragedy.
Both Jennifer and James Crumbley addressed the court before sentencing, expressing regret for not recognizing the signs of their son's distress sooner.
The families of the victims expressed dismay at the Crumbleys' apparent lack of accountability. Steve St. Juliana, whose daughter was killed, remarked, "They chose to ignore the warning signs. And now, as we’ve heard through all of the objections, they continue to choose to blame everyone but themselves."
Ethan Crumbley had previously been sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2023 for the shooting at Oxford High School in Detroit on November 30, 2021.
