A tragic event unfolded at Viertola school in Vantaa, Finland, on Tuesday, where a 12-year-old child lost their life, and two others were severely injured, as a fellow 12-year-old suspect opened fire inside a classroom.
The injured children were promptly taken to the hospital, and although details of their injuries have not been disclosed, the situation is under control.
Viertola school, located in Finland's fourth largest city, Vantaa, has two campuses, with the incident occurring at the Jokiranta campus.
The school, accommodating 90 staff and 800 students aged seven to 16, had resumed classes after the long Easter weekend when the shooting transpired.
The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended in a peaceful manner in a different area of Helsinki. The firearm was also recovered from the suspect.
Authorities have confirmed that the immediate threat has been neutralized, but caution residents to remain indoors as a precautionary measure.
Expressing condolences and concern, Finland's interior minister, Mari Rantanen, stated, "The day started in a horrifying way. There has been a shooting incident at the Viertola school in Vantaa. I can only imagine the pain and worry that many families are experiencing at the moment.
