A fire that occurred at Senator Bernie Sanders' office in Vermont is being investigated as arson by the Burlington Fire Department.
The incident took place on a Friday morning, prompting firefighters to respond to a fire located in the vestibule between the elevator and the entrance door to Senator Sanders' office.
According to the Burlington Police, an unidentified male individual entered the vestibule and sprayed an accelerant on the entrance door before igniting it and fleeing the scene.
This resulted in a significant fire that damaged the door and part of the vestibule, posing a risk to the staff working in the office. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the building sustained water damage.
The suspect remains at large, and the motive behind the arson is currently unknown. Kathryn Van Haste, the state director for Senator Sanders, expressed gratitude to the Burlington Fire and Police Departments for their prompt response.
She also mentioned that they are coordinating with the U.S. Capitol Police and Senate Sergeant at Arms regarding the incident.
The Burlington Fire Marshal's office, Burlington Police Department, and Vermont State Police are conducting a collaborative investigation into the arson.
Capitol Police have noted an increase in threat assessment cases, including concerning statements and direct threats, over the past year.
Senator Sanders, 82, is currently serving his third term as senator and previously served for 16 years in the House. He also served as the mayor of Burlington.
