Taiwan experienced its most powerful earthquake in 25 years on Wednesday, with a 7.4 magnitude tremor striking the island’s eastern coast.

The earthquake, which occurred at 7:58 a.m. local time, was centered 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Hualien city and had a depth of 34.8 kilometers (21 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake caused multiple buildings to collapse, triggered landslides, and tragically resulted in the loss of at least four lives.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Taiwan’s National Fire Agency reported that 57 individuals were injured.

The agency also stated that the quake's epicenter was in Hualien County, where a hiker was among those who lost their lives.

The NFA is still collecting information on the casualties.

Significant damage has been reported, including people trapped in collapsed buildings, thousands of homes without power, and a major highway along the east coast closed due to landslides and rockfalls.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration has warned of powerful aftershocks up to magnitude 7 expected throughout the week.

Initial tsunami warnings were issued for Taiwan, southern Japan, and the Philippines. However, these warnings were later lifted as waves less than half a meter were observed along some coasts.

The earthquake also led to the suspension of flights by airlines.

In response to the disaster, Taiwan has mobilized military personnel for disaster relief efforts. Schools and workplaces have suspended operations due to the ongoing aftershocks. Outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen has instructed her administration to provide necessary assistance and minimize the disaster's impact.

Taiwan is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

This earthquake is the strongest to hit Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.7 magnitude quake struck south of Taipei, resulting in significant loss of life and injuries.

At least 26 buildings collapsed in Wednesday's earthquake, with reports of people trapped in seven of them.

More than 91,000 households are without electricity, and the island’s Taipower Company is working to restore power.

Footage posted on social media shows collapsed buildings in Hualien and residents helping trapped individuals escape.

Videos also depict vehicles bouncing on a shaking highway, an overpass swaying in Taipei, and commuters struggling to maintain balance inside a shaking Taipei metro train.

Large boulders were seen on the Suhua Highway, along Taiwan’s east coast, with several tunnels damaged. Another highway connecting the west and east of Taiwan was also damaged by falling rocks, injuring nine people.

Tsunami warnings prompted evacuations in Taiwan’s Chenggong, where tsunami heights reached almost half a meter.

Japan also issued a tsunami alert for southern Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, with waves up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) high.

Flights to and from Okinawa’s Naha airport resumed after the tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory.
