In 2022, a video capturing the bravery of a great-grandmother thwarting a robbery outside her California residence went viral. Faye Taylor, 77, intervened by hurling her cane at a man attempting to snatch an elderly woman’s purse.
Taylor, a longshoreman at the Port of Oakland, has decided to run for Oakland City Council, District 3. She witnessed a surge in crime in her neighborhood and aims to address it. Despite her house being a popular gathering spot for youngsters, Taylor has always maintained discipline
Reflecting on her decision to run, Taylor stated, "You got to act like you have good sense around me." She intends to set an example for her district by saving her alma mater, McClymonds High School, providing housing and services for the homeless, offering resources for youth and education, supporting senior citizens, and reducing crime.
Having grown up in West Oakland and attended schools there, Taylor is determined to make necessary changes. She is particularly passionate about ensuring no one in her district goes hungry. Drawing from her own experiences of childhood hunger, Taylor wants to provide food for the homeless and local students in need.
Recalling the support her family received from the church during tough times, Taylor is inspired to care for her community likewise. She emphasized the importance of being vigilant and caring for one's neighbors and surroundings, especially in the face of rising global challenges.
