Recent footage of Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, has sparked renewed speculation about his health, raising concerns about the well-being of the close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speculation surrounding Kadyrov's health has been circulating for several months.

He governs the predominantly Muslim Russian republic in the Caucasus region with a firm hand and has faced allegations of human rights violations by international organizations.

Known for his unwavering loyalty to Putin, Kadyrov's forces have been actively involved in the conflict in Ukraine.

Rumors about Kadyrov's health gained traction last September when Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukrainian military intelligence, stated that the Chechen leader had been unwell "for a long time."

Ukrainian publication Obozrevatel even claimed that Kadyrov had slipped into a coma and was airlifted to Moscow. Newsweek has reached out to the Kremlin for comment on the matter.

In response to the speculation, Kadyrov posted an unverified video on his Telegram channel, showing him walking in an undisclosed location.

He urged those who "cannot discern truth from lies on the internet" to go for a walk outdoors.

While there has been no independent confirmation regarding Kadyrov's health, recent video clips have only added to the intrigue, according to Agentstvo, an independent Russian news outlet.

Despite efforts to dispel rumors about his deteriorating health, the footage has raised further questions.

One clip, dated April 1, shows Kadyrov walking past a construction site at the Grozny Palace of Celebrations without speaking.

Another clip shows him briefly greeting people who were waiting for him.

Agentstvo noted Kadyrov's subdued demeanor during an evening meal, where he weakly tapped on the table while others clapped vigorously.

This was in contrast to a similar event in 2021, where he enthusiastically applauded. Video footage of Kadyrov receiving guests from Jordan showed him moving uncomfortably, and when visiting the grave of an Islamic theologian, he was seen using a cane, the agency reported.

In February, Kadyrov was absent from Putin's address to Russia's Federal Assembly for the second consecutive year.

The Russian daily newspaper Kommersant reported that Kadyrov had caught a cold.

However, the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe suggested that his absence might have been due to another course of treatment.

On March 27, Agentstvo analyzed videos on Kadyrov's Telegram channel since the beginning of the year.

They observed that there were only brief close-ups of the Chechen leader, whereas previously, he would be shown more frequently and for longer durations.

Flight tracking data reported by the outlet indicated that Kadyrov's plane had been flying to Moscow regularly since February.

However, the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel, which claims to have links with Russian intelligence, stated that these flights were no longer necessary as equipment had been installed in Grozny.
