WBC middleweight boxing champion Jermall Charlo found himself in legal trouble recently, facing charges related to an incident in Pearland, Texas. According to Pearland Police Department public information officer Chad Rogers, Charlo was arrested for driving while intoxicated, eluding and fleeing from police, and leaving the scene of a crash that caused over $200 in damage.
The arrest took place on Monday night at 12799 Broadway Street in Pearland, a suburb of Houston.
Upon arriving at the scene of the collision, officers observed a verbal altercation between the involved parties.
Charlo then fled the scene in his Lamborghini, ignoring police instructions to stop. Law enforcement officers eventually managed to block his path and took him into custody. Charlo's blood alcohol concentration was measured at over 0.15%, significantly higher than the legal limit of .08% in Texas. The 33-year-old was subsequently taken to Brazoria County Jail and was later released after posting a $9,500 surety bond.
Charlo, renowned as one of the world's top boxers, boasts an undefeated record of 33 wins and no losses. His most recent fight was in November 2023 against José Benavidez Jr., which he won by unanimous decision in a catchweight bout.
Despite his impressive record, Charlo has not defended his middleweight belt since defeating Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021.
He was slated to fight Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez in September 2023, but the fight was canceled. Instead, his identical twin brother, Jermell Charlo, the light middleweight champion with a record of 35 wins and 2 losses, stepped in, but lost via unanimous decision.
