Xavier L. Tate Jr. was apprehended by the Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on suspicion of the murder of Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca.
Tate Jr. was discovered on Wednesday night in Glendale Heights, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, according to police. Officer Huesca, 30, was still in uniform and heading home from his shift early Sunday morning when he was shot and killed, just two days before his 31st birthday, authorities stated.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described Huesca's death as a result of "an act of unconscionable gun violence in our city." The Chicago police superintendent stated that Huesca was the "victim of the type of crime he was working against."
Police officers found Huesca outside his home, on the ground, when they responded to a ShotSpotter gunshot detection alert just before 3 a.m., according to authorities. Huesca was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time," the Chicago PD stated in a release regarding Tate Jr.'s arrest.
