Police in Pittsburgh have reported a tragic incident where a steel drum, weighing thousands of pounds, rolled out of a construction site and fatally struck a woman walking on a nearby sidewalk.
The accident occurred around 10:40 a.m. on Friday in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, near the construction site of the University of Pittsburgh's new sports performance center.
According to police, the drum was either knocked over or dislodged from heavy equipment, then rolled several hundred feet down a hill, through a fence, and onto the sidewalk where the woman was walking with co-workers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Western Psychiatric Hospital.
The drum then crossed a road before coming to rest against a pickup truck.
The woman, who suffered a head injury, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. Her identity has not been released, and no other injuries were reported. The accident is currently under investigation.
