HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, is set to face new charges in a military justice proceeding on Tuesday. Teixeira, 22, pleaded guilty to leaking classified military documents, including information on the war in Ukraine, and was arrested in April 2023 for one of the most serious U.S. national security breaches in years.
In March, he pleaded guilty to charges by the U.S. Department of Justice, agreeing to serve a minimum of 11 years in prison.
However, the Air Force announced on May 1 that it would pursue separate charges against him in the military justice system for alleged misconduct related to his duties. These charges include obstructing justice and failing to obey a lawful order, carrying a maximum sentence of 10-1/2 years if convicted.
Prosecutors will present evidence at Tuesday's hearing at Hanscom Air Force Base to determine if the case should proceed to trial by court-martial.
Teixeira, who held a top-secret security clearance, accessed classified documents, including details on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while serving as an airman 1st class at Otis Air National Guard Base. He shared this information on Discord under the username "TheExcaliburEffect," claiming access to classified material related to Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iran, and China.
Teixeira is also scheduled to be sentenced in the Justice Department's case on Sept. 27.
