In Tennessee, a 22-year-old man lost his life when high winds toppled a tree onto his car.
A tornado emergency was issued for areas south of Nashville, including Spring Hill, Chapel Hill, and Eagleville.
In Columbia, 45 miles south of Nashville, people were injured, and homes were damaged.
In North Carolina, a state of emergency was declared for Gaston County after a large storm. One person was killed when a tree fell on their car, and power outages affected over 135,000 customers in the state.
Tornadoes were confirmed in several states, including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and West Virginia, causing destruction and injuries.
A FedEx facility was destroyed in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed in various locations.
Residents described chaotic scenes as people sought shelter and assisted each other in the aftermath of the storms.
Despite the destruction, many expressed gratitude for surviving and helping others.
The severe weather is expected to continue throughout the week in the Midwest and South, affecting millions of people, before clearing up over the weekend.
