Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, delivered an update on Tuesday regarding his grandfather's health, indicating that he is approaching the end of his journey.
"My grandfather is holding up. As you are aware, he has been under hospice care for almost a year and a half," Jason Carter disclosed at the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum held at the Carter Center. Jason Carter currently serves as the chair of the board of trustees for the global charity established by former President and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in 1982.
Jimmy Carter, aged 99, entered hospice care in February 2023. While hospice care is often linked with the final stages of life, it does not always indicate an immediate end. Last year, the Carter Center announced that the former president would not be receiving any "additional medical intervention."
"I truly believe he is nearing the end. As I've mentioned previously, there is a significant aspect of his faith journey that is crucial to him, and that particular aspect can only be experienced at the very end, and I believe he has reached that point," Jason Carter remarked on Tuesday.
The former president's eldest grandson also reflected on the passing of his grandmother, describing it as a challenging moment for the entire family, including his grandfather. Rosalynn Carter passed away last year at the age of 96. Jason Carter shared with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week that his grandfather spent hours bidding farewell to his wife towards the end of her life.
"He had the chance to bid her farewell, and after that, he was completely at peace with it. It was truly remarkable to witness that type of closure after 77 years of marriage," he shared on the "Monica Pearson Show."
Although Jimmy Carter attended Rosalynn Carter's memorial services last year, he was not well enough to speak at the tributes.
