An Air Force instructor pilot has tragically lost his life after the ejection seat on his aircraft activated while the plane was on the ground, officials have confirmed.
The incident occurred at Sheppard Air Force Base near Wichita Falls, Texas, on Monday. Capt. John Robertson, who served with the 80th Operations Support Squadron, was in a T-6A Texan II aircraft during ground operations when he was unexpectedly ejected from the aircraft, sustaining severe injuries, according to a statement from Sheppard Air Force Base released on Tuesday.
Despite efforts to save him, Robertson succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning, according to Air Force officials.
Col. Mitchell J. Cok, the acting wing commander, expressed condolences, saying, "This is a devastating loss for Captain Robertson's family and loved ones, and for the entire 80th Flying Training Wing. Captain Robertson was a highly valued Airman and instructor pilot. Our deepest condolences go out to all who knew and loved him."
An interim safety board investigation has been initiated, with a full Air Force Safety Investigation Board expected to be established later this week, according to Sheppard Air Force Base. The timeline for the completion of the investigation has not been disclosed.
"We are grateful for the M1 maintenance team who promptly provided lifesaving care, and for the heroic efforts of the security forces, fire, and medical personnel both on base and at United Regional Hospital," Cok added. "Their efforts allowed time for Captain Robertson's family to be with him when he passed."
