Breaking: Longtime Democratic Rep. Announces Shock Retirement – What's Next for New Hampshire?

A long-serving Democratic representative from New Hampshire has announced she will not seek re-election this year, setting the stage for an open race in the 2nd Congressional District.

Rep. Annie Kuster confirmed to WMUR-TV in Manchester that she will complete her current term and step down from the House when the 119th Congress convenes next January.

Her decision, reported by the outlet, has sent ripples through New Hampshire politics.

The 67-year-old congresswoman, who has represented the district since 2013, has been a prominent figure in state politics.

She has led the New Democrat Coalition, a centrist and pro-business group, a role she intends to continue, although it's unclear if she will do so for the remainder of her term or beyond.

Kuster cited a desire for more time with her family and expressed interest in supporting fellow Democratic politicians.

She has been known for her advocacy on several issues, including the opioid crisis and sexual violence, leveraging bipartisan cooperation to address these challenges.

Her retirement announcement, posted on her House web page, reflects on her achievements and commitment to bipartisan progress.

Kuster pledged to continue serving New Hampshire until the end of her term in January 2025, focusing on advancing legislative priorities and advocating for her constituents.

With Kuster stepping down, the race for the 2nd Congressional District seat is expected to be more competitive in November.

WMUR speculated that Kuster could influence the selection of her successor, although she has not yet expressed a preference on the matter.
