Putin's Shocking Victory Day Parade: What You Didn't See on TV!

Russian President Vladimir Putin led a subdued Victory Day parade, emphasizing unity while affirming Russia's commitment to the conflict in Ukraine. However, beneath the martial display, tensions within the Kremlin and Russian society simmered.

The parade in Red Square featured 9,000 military personnel, including troops involved in the Ukrainian conflict. Leading the mechanized column was a symbolic World War II-era T-34 tank. While May 9 is a day to commemorate the Soviet sacrifices in WWII, under Putin's leadership, it has become a solemn day akin to a secular religion. Russians participate in "Immortal Regiment" marches, and Putin himself lays flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, the parade has been scaled back. Putin has framed the conflict as a battle against "neo-Nazism," drawing parallels to WWII. Despite Russia's military gains, Putin called for further sacrifices, acknowledging the country's "difficult, transitional period."

The parade took place against the backdrop of a bribery scandal within the Ministry of Defense. Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov was arrested, along with two businessmen, on suspicion of involvement in a corruption probe. Ivanov has denied any wrongdoing, and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Ivanov's mentor, participated in the parade as usual.

Ivanov was responsible for overseeing projects in Mariupol, Ukraine, raising concerns about the potential misappropriation of funds. His ex-partner's lavish lifestyle, despite US and EU sanctions, has also come under scrutiny. Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation continues to investigate corruption, despite his death.

Putin's Victory Day address contrasted with ongoing corruption issues. While defense spending has supported the economy amid sanctions, inefficiency and corruption remain persistent problems. The parade portrayed Russia as proud and strong, despite these challenges. After 25 years in power, Putin's leadership emphasizes patriotism and continuity.
